At St Dominic’s Catholic College, we are passionate about preparing our students for life outside of secondary school. Through weekly lessons, Year 11 and 13 students are taught how to set goals for their futures and how to achieve these goals. Topics covered include applying for jobs, applying for universities, making informed decisions about your future and developing study skills.
All senior students are able to request one-to-one career counselling sessions which can be scheduled during the school day. Students can make appointments by emailing Miss van Hoffen at cvanhoffen@stdoms.ac.nz. All Year 12 and 13 students will be individually interviewed each year.

Career Bites
Every Wednesday, we hold a session with different guest speakers. In Term 1 and 2 we have university presentations to give senior students a taste of tertiary programmes, pre-requisite subjects required and career pathways for the particular programmes of interest to them. In Term 3, we offer Course Planning sessions for the respective Universities that students have enrolled with. Throughout the year we have various speakers who have been invited to share their work experiences with our students throughout the year. Subjects that speakers will cover include financial literacy and student loans, how to be a high-performing team member, relationship building and networking skills and customer service aptitude.
Career Expo
In May, the senior school attend the Combined West Auckland school Careers Expo. This event is open to all West Auckland Secondary Schools in order to discover more information about career pathways, job opportunities and to learn more about tertiary transitions.
Students engage with interactive exhibits from various businesses and are able to glean information about their tertiary next steps. Some can hop in a NZ Defence Force plane, others can complete push-up competitions, wrap McDonald’s hamburgers, and learn the names of the human skeleton.
